Spasticity Management

Spasticity is a condition commonly associated with medical conditions such as a stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy for example. Spasticity can lead to muscles become tight and lead to joint contractors contributing to decrease in function, pain, skin breakdown for example. At New Westminster Rehabilitation Medicine we have a dedicated group of clinicians using multi-modal treatment strategies including conservative (orthotics, casting, TENS machine, pharmacotherapy) and interventions such as the use of botulinum toxin injections for focal spasticity and multi-focal spasticity. We use ultrasound-guided injection techniques for injection of botulinum toxin A (Botox, Xeomin, Dysport) for spasticity management.

We also have a interdisciplinary team approach involving the physiatrist, orthotist, nurse and orthopaedic surgeon to help in management of spasticity.
